FLOATING BODIES OR FLIES

Because your vision deserves to be free from distractions.

Floaters (myodesopsias) are small, thread-like, dot-like, or even spider-web-like objects that many people see moving in their field of vision, especially when looking at a background with intense contrasts, such as blank pages, clear skies, etc.

Floaters are the result of the presence of opacities that form in the vitreous humor, the gelatinous body that fills the eyeball, and which, when light passes through, cast their shadow on the retina.

They are normally a natural consequence of the aging of this vitreous body, which loses water and decreases in volume. Consequently, the vitreous proteins that have lost water condense, losing transparency. Although these spots appear to be in front of the eye, they are actually floating inside it.

Posterior vitreous detachment Aging of the vitreous humor Myopia Diabetes

Can they be prevented?

Floaters cannot be prevented. What can and should be detected are the potential complications associated with them. Therefore, it is important to see an ophthalmologist when you notice their sudden onset, when they are accompanied by flashing lights (photopsia), and/or when you notice a loss of vision in some area of the visual field.

IMPORTANT: RISK OF RETINAL DETACHMENT

It is necessary to have a fundus examination performed if new floating spots are observed.

The appearance of new floaters indicates a new collapse of the vitreous gel structure, which can create traction on the retinal wall and cause tears. If a retinal tear occurs, if undetected, it can lead to the formation of a retinal detachment. It is extremely important to see an ophthalmologist for an examination of the fundus if you notice new floaters or flashes of light.
