"Dry eye"...

Dry eye is a fairly common condition that occurs when the eyes don’t produce enough tears, or when the tears are of poor quality or evaporate too quickly. It affects the ocular surface due to a lack of lubrication and can cause vision problems.

Symptoms

Some of the symptoms of dry eyes are:

· Sensation of “sand in the eyes.” · Itching in the eyes. · Red eyes. · Blurred vision that improves after blinking. · Tearing: Paradoxically, the eye tries to protect itself by reflexively producing tears.

Your hydrated eyes, your happy look.

Main causes

·Age: Although it can occur at any age, the likelihood of developing dry eye increases with age and is more common in women.
·Hormonal changes: menopause, contraceptives, pregnancy…
· Environmental factors: wind, sun, dry air…
· Certain activities such as reading, writing or working on computers, as blinking is reduced and the tear film evaporates more quickly.
·Medications: antihistamines, antidepressants, beta-blockers, diuretics…
·Certain eye surgeries.
·Use of contact lenses.
·Certain systemic diseases (Sjögren, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus…)
·Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids).
·Some scarring diseases of the ocular surface.

How can it be diagnosed?

Dry eye can be diagnosed by using specific dyes (fluorescein) to assess whether there is damage to the ocular surface and to calculate the time it takes for the tear film to “break up” (tear break-up time).

The amount of tears produced can also be calculated by using strips of paper left inside the lower eyelid for a few minutes (Schirmer test).
