What is a macular hole?
A macular hole is an opening in the central area of the retina, or macula. The gel inside the eye (vitreous) can lose volume and shrink over time. When this gel deteriorates, it can exert traction on the macula. In most cases, it separates without causing any negative effects. However, when this gel adheres tightly to the central area of the retina (macula), this traction can cause small openings in the center of the eye. Macular holes usually appear in patients over 57 years of age, but can also occur in patients with large eyes (myopia) or who have suffered ocular trauma.

Symptoms
The symptoms of a macular hole are varied. The most common are:
• Central blurred vision • Distorted vision (metamorphopsia), i.e., straight lines appear wavy • Scotomas: areas of blindness in the visual field
Treatment
Some cases may close spontaneously, but vitreoretinal surgery (vitrectomy) is usually the treatment of choice.
