Glaucoma

One of the main causes of blindness in the world

Glaucoma: The Silent Thief of Vision

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a chronic, degenerative, and irreversible disease that causes irrecoverable vision loss. More than a million people in Spain suffer from glaucoma, although half are unaware of it. In fact, it’s the second leading cause of blindness worldwide.

Glaucoma is caused by progressive damage to the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain. In most cases, it is due to higher than normal eye pressure, which causes constriction of the optic nerve.

Detecting glaucoma early can save your sight.

Symptoms: Unfortunately, there are no specific symptoms of glaucoma, and it’s a very difficult disease to detect. Most patients don’t experience any symptoms until the disease’s advanced stages.

Causes: There are no specific causes. However, there are some risk factors that can contribute to the development of glaucoma.

An eye exam can make all the difference

How can it be diagnosed?

Glaucoma is diagnosed through a complete ophthalmological examination. During the visit, vision, eye pressure, visual field, optic nerve OCT, and pachymetry are checked. These tests are very simple and painless. An early diagnosis will allow you to lead a completely normal life.

A timely visit can save your eyes

It’s common for patients over 60 to come to our clinics who have already lost much of their vision. That’s why we recommend a checkup starting at age 40 to prevent irreversible damage.

With control and treatment, it is possible to stop the progression of glaucoma.

What treatments are available?

There are various treatments aimed at preserving a patient’s vision. At PRESBIT, we offer the most conservative treatment possible for each patient, tailored to their lifestyle.

In many cases, instilling drops into the eyeball at night is sufficient to control glaucoma.

Glaucoma can also be treated with laser treatment or, when necessary, with surgery.

Glaucoma has no cure, but it does have effective treatment.
