Dr. Luis Amselem Gómez | Ophthalmologist
Membership number: 43113
Dr. Luis Amselem earned his degree in Medicine and Surgery from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (U.A.B.) and completed his residency at Valle Hebrón Hospital in Barcelona. He subsequently began a residency program in Ophthalmology at the General University Hospital of Valencia, where he earned the title of Specialist in Ophthalmology.
During his residency, he showed a particular interest in the subspecialty of retina, completing fellowships at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota (USA), where he was IRB (Institutional Review Board) certified for research at the Mayo Clinic and participated in numerous research projects, including studies on AMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration), retinal vascular diseases (diabetic retinopathy, arterial and venous occlusions, etc.), and ocular oncology.
Dr. Amselem has published numerous articles as first author in the most prestigious international and national journals in his field, and is a regular speaker at national and international conferences on the retina.
Since 2008, his biography has been included in Marquis’s prestigious publication “Who’s Who in the World,” which features the biographies of the most notable individuals in various fields on an international level. He was the first researcher worldwide to publish studies on various therapies for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), ocular ischemic syndrome, and various intraocular tumors, describing the first case of treatment with intravitreal Avastin for intraocular breast cancer metastases. He has also been a leading researcher in the diagnosis of intraocular tumors.
His professional interests also focus on vitreoretinal surgery, and he devotes much of his time to addressing surgical complications associated with retinal detachments, diabetic retinopathy, and diseases of the vitreoretinal interface.
He is a guest surgeon at national and international retinal surgery conferences, where he performs live surgeries to share with his colleagues the latest advances in the treatment of various retinal conditions.
He was recently appointed to the Editorial Board of the prestigious international journal “Journal of Ophthalmology”.
