Dr. Luis Amselem graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and trained at the Valle Hebron Hospital in Barcelona. Subsequently, he obtained a MIR position as a resident in Ophthalmology at the Hospital General Universitario de Valencia, obtaining the title of Specialist in Ophthalmology.
During his residency, he showed a special interest in the subspecialty of Retina, and stayed at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota (USA), being IRB, Institutional Review Board Certified for research at the Mayo Clinic, participating in numerous research projects including studies on AMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration), Retinal Vascular Diseases (Diabetic Retinopathy, Arterial and Venous Occlusions …) and Ocular Oncology.
Dr Amselem has published numerous articles as first author in the most prestigious international and national journals in his speciality, and is a regular speaker at national and international congresses on Retina.
Since 2008, his biography has been included in Marqui’s prestigious publication “Who is Who in the World“, which compiles the biographies of the most notable people in multiple fields at an international level. He has been the first researcher in the world to publish several therapies in the treatment of AMD, Ocular Ischaemic Syndrome and various intraocular tumours, describing the first case of treatment with intravitreal Avastin for metastasis of intraocular breast cancer. He has also been a leading researcher in the diagnosis of intraocular tumours.
His professional interest also focuses on Vitreoretinal Surgery, devoting much of his time to resolving the surgical complications of Retinal Detachment, Diabetic Retinopathy and Vitreoretinal Interface Diseases.
He is a guest surgeon at National and International Retinal Surgery Congresses, performing live surgeries to share with his colleagues the main advances in the treatment of various retinal pathologies.
He has recently been appointed member of the Editorial Board of the prestigious international journal JOURNAL OF OPHTHALMOLOGY.
