Glaucoma is a chronic, degenerative and irreversible disease that causes irrecoverable vision loss. More than one million people in Spain suffer from glaucoma, although half of them are unaware of it. In fact, it is the second leading cause of blindness in the world.
Glaucoma is caused by progressive damage to the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain. In most cases it is due to a higher than normal eye pressure, which causes a strangulation of the optic nerve.
There are different treatments aimed at preserving the patient’s vision. At PRESBIT we offer the most conservative treatment possible for each patient adapted to his or her lifestyle.
In many cases, instilling drops into the eyeball at night is sufficient to control glaucoma.
In addition, glaucoma can also be combated with laser treatment or, when necessary, surgery.
It is common for patients over 60 years of age who have already lost most of their vision to come to our clinics. That is why we recommend a check-up from the age of 40 onwards, in order to avoid irreversible damage. Make an appointment at your nearest PRESBIT center.
