Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a chronic, degenerative and irreversible disease that causes irrecoverable vision loss. More than one million people in Spain suffer from glaucoma, although half of them are unaware of it. In fact, it is the second leading cause of blindness in the world.

Glaucoma is caused by progressive damage to the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain. In most cases it is due to a higher than normal eye pressure, which causes a strangulation of the optic nerve.

Symptoms
Unfortunately, there are no specific symptoms of glaucoma, and it is a very difficult disease to detect. Most patients do not have any symptoms until advanced stages of the disease.
Causes
There are no specific causes either. However, there are some risk factors that may favor the onset of glaucoma.
– Over 40 years of age.
– Elevated eye pressure.
– Family history of glaucoma.
– Myopia.
– Other ocular diseases.
How can it be diagnosed?
The diagnosis of glaucoma is made by a complete ophthalmologic examination. During the visit, vision, ocular pressure, visual field, topography and pachymetry are checked. These tests are very simple and without discomfort. An early diagnosis will allow you to lead a completely normal life.
What treatments are available?

There are different treatments aimed at preserving the patient’s vision. At PRESBIT we offer the most conservative treatment possible for each patient adapted to his or her lifestyle.

In many cases, instilling drops into the eyeball at night is sufficient to control glaucoma.

In addition, glaucoma can also be combated with laser treatment or, when necessary, surgery.
