Dr. Luis Amselem graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (U.A.B.), doing his training at the Valle Hebrón Hospital in Barcelona. Later, he gained an MIR position as a resident of Ophthalmology at the University General Hospital of Valencia, obtaining the title of Specialist in Ophthalmology. During the residency he showed a special interest for the subspecialty of retina, doing stays at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota (USA), being IRB, Institutional Review Board Certified for research at the Mayo Clinic, participating in numerous research projects among which there are studies on ARMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration), Vascular Diseases of the Retina (Diabetic Retinopathy, Arterial and Venous Occlusions, …) and Ocular Oncology.
Dr. Amselem has published numerous articles firstly as an author in the most prestigious international and national journals in his specialty, and as a regular speaker at national and international retina conferences. Since 2008, his biography has been included in the prestigious publication of Marqui’s “Who is Who in the World”, which contains the biographies of the most notable people in multiple areas at an international level. He has been the first researcher worldwide to publish various therapies in the treatment of ARMD, Ocular Ischemic Syndrome and various Intraocular Tumours, describing the first case of intravitreal Avastin treatment for intraocular breast cancer metastasis. He has also been a leading researcher in the diagnosis of intraocular tumours.
His professional interest is also focused on Vitreo-Retinal Surgery, devoting much of his time to solve the surgical complications of Retinal Detachments, Diabetic Retinopathy and Vitreoretinal Interface Diseases. He is a visiting surgeon at National and International Retina Surgery Conferences, performing live surgeries to share with his colleagues the main advances in the treatment of various pathologies of the retina.
He has recently been appointed as a member of the Editorial Board of the prestigious international journal JOURNAL OF OPHTHALMOLOGY.
